These stains can be the result of a water glass that was left on a marble countertop for too long or from hard water buildup around sinks and showers. Etch marks occur when your marble encounters an acidic substance. So things like lemon juice wine some household bathroom cleaners fruits and many other household items chemically react with the marble surface and actually dissolves part of the top surface of the marble. Wash it off after 12 24 hours and the stain should be gone.

Mold can stain marble bathroom countertops floors etc. If water leaches into the tile it can cause the iron to rust. It stains shows dirt and looks worse over time. I thought it was soap scum at first but it is some kind of stain.

You see this most often on marble floor tile but certainly can occur on shower walls if water is getting behind the tiles providing enough moisture to leach into the marble tiles oxidize the iron deposits within the marble and carry the rusty water to the surface staining the tile.
